In addition to traditional white body color, these pearls come in a rainbow of natural colors as brilliant as lavender, tangerine, peach, and every shade in between. Their varied shapes include potato, rice, coin, pear, and round.
Freshwater pearls are produced by various species of mollusks that live in lakes, riverbeds, and creek bottoms in China, Japan, and the United States. On pearl farms each mussel is surgically implanted with up to 50 tiny pieces of mantle tissues, a process known as nucleation. Once the mussels have been nucleated, it takes 3 to 5 years for pearls to fully develop.
